Overview
A project inspired by Chicago-based artist, Aryen Lei, who created the At The Table playing cards. I was very inspired by the collaboration she sparks between herself and the storytellers which inspired each card. The illustrations on her cards are inspired by stories she collects from others online of being at the table I also love that her creations have a practical use that ties into the theme, so I decided to create recipe cards. These recipe cards are inspired by stories that are centred around food or a recipe - ie "In The Kitchen".
Often as digital arts and designers, we don't make things that will be tangible. We spend hours and hours on computer designing for digital use so I was extra excited to create something that wasn't just for the online space. I am also very passionate about illustrating so this project allowed me to develop this skill even further.
Main Elements
Collobartion - with the storytellers and the users, as they write their creations on the cards
Physical use - printed and serve a purpose
Each card features an illustration inspired by being in the kitchen on the front and a place to write a recipe on the back.
Pitch Presentation & Planning

Final Card Illustration & Layout Design

Front of recipe card one which is inspired by a friend's story of making empanadas with her grandma which has always been such an important food to her. Her grandma's empanadas with raisins and potatoes were always her favourite. it was also such a special and fun day when she got to make them with her grandma.

Front of recipe card two which is inspired by my professor's story of going to his grandparent's house as a kid and it always smelled aggressively of vinegar because they were constantly canning everything they had in their home.

This is the back of the recipe cards which is featured on each card. I chose to use grids because they allow the user to write as big or as small as they'd like, unlike specified lines or a blank space which has no guides.
What I Learned/What I Would Have Done Differently
Add Scan to Listen for The Stories
The stories that inspired the illustrations are very fun and heartwarming. It would have been amazng had I thought of a way to add the stories to the cards so that people can read/hear them. Looking back I would have added a bar code to the packaging or to each card that people could scan.
